2020 Brings More Records, Success for BSW/Crow Clients

In what was a bizarre year from start to finish, 2020 was highlighted by an unforgettable Breeders’ Cup weekend as well as an unforgettable comeback by the horse of a lifetime, Monomoy Girl.

BSW/Crow clients doubled their Breeders’ Cup win totals from 2019, winning four races this year after capturing two last year. 2020 also featured 41 two year old winners for our clients as well as over 60 stakes wins.

The group was led by the amazing Monomoy Girl who, even after being out of action for 18 months, came back in 2020 and completed her perfect year with a second success in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff for owners owners Monomoy Stables, Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stables. Having previously won the Distaff in 2018, Monomoy Girl was out until May of this year when she made a winning return to the races at Churchill Downs. From there, she would win three consecutive graded stakes races, including the G1 La Troienne and the G2 Ruffian in addition to her Breeders’ Cup score before selling for $9,500,000 through Elite Sales at Fasig Tipton’s Night of the Stars, a world record for a racing/broodmare prospect.

In 2019, The BSW Euro Venture bought its first nine horses at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Just over a year later, the group was reaping the rewards of that trip as Aunt Pearl (IRE) maintained her perfect record when running away with the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Purchased for 280,000 Guineas, Aunt Pearl became a TDN ‘Rising Star’ with a blowout win in a Churchill Downs maiden before turning in a similar effort when winning the G2 Jessamine at Keeneland on her way to her Breeders’ Cup success for owners Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, Michael Kisber, Peter Deutsch and The Elkstone Group.

2020 also saw Authentic win both the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic for the Avengers ownership group of Spendthrift Farm, My Racehorse, Madaket Stables, Starlight Racing and Golconda Stables. The three year old son of top sire Into Mischief was originally campaigned by the Avengers, the same group that have campaigned Charlatan and Eight Rings. Now retired, Authentic stands at Spendthrift Farm where he will begin his stallion career in 2021.

One of the most unexpected stories of the year came from the ageless wonder Whitmore, who at age 7, won the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint for the first time after finishing 2nd and 3rd in prior runnings for owners Robert La Penta, Southern Springs Stables and Head of Plains Partner. With 38 races now under his belt, Whitmore has won 15 times with earnings of $4,247,850 in what has truly been a remarkable career.

Private Purchase Channel Maker also had his best year on the track in 2020 for owners Wachtel Stable, Gary Barber. R. A. Hill Stable and Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, winning back to back G1 races in New York by a combined 8 lengths with romps in both the Sword Dancer in Saratoga and the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont.

As our business has grown over the last couple of years, we’ve began syndicating more horses to lower the barriers of entry into the game, allowing more owners to be a part of the sport. In 2020, our syndicated horses performed better than ever with Secret Message winning the G3 Mint Julep at Churchill Downs, defeating 11 stakes winners in the process, Hello Beautiful winning two stakes races at Laurel by a combined 14 1/4 lengths and King’s Harlequin winning a G3 at ParisLongchamp after earning a G2 placing at Deauville.

The syndicated horses also hit it out of the park in the sales ring at Keeneland November in 2020 through Elite Sales. Empressof the Nile sold for $875,000 in-foal to Quality Road, Secret Message hammered for $625,000 and Munchkin Money sold for $220,000 in-foal to American Pharoah.
